who stole the meat from the cooking pot?

Who knew when R Kelly decided to unleash his unquestionable talents (altho we can at times question his sanity) to the world, from chicago..that he would inspire a generation living on another continent on the other side of the world? Who knew? Just as R Kelly continued and built upon a tradition that Aaron Hall before him had started, and before Mr Hall, Charlie Wilson, we now have some successors to that lineage.

Enter Maleke from Nigeria...

This is brilliant in layers... Sometimes i think a lot is lost in translation on the great continent of ours...but truly this is brilliant...In addition to being a completely fun rnb track (it's completely ripped from start to finish), the subject matter is sooooooooo african.

Who stole the meat from the cooking pot?
*regular readers of this blog will remember my last post, the incredible zimbabwean superstar in waiting, was singing about carrots...and in nigeria - meat*

I feel it neccessary to warn aspiring actresses in africa to learn from those that have come before. Hip Hop accepts that many of its female offspring have ended up as eye candy at best and all kinda grades of woman in music vids (which is fine girls...do your thang). So lets not birth a generation of meat stealers too? When Afro-pop takes over the mainstream, let us not be just seen in one light (with dodgy fashion fair make up to boot) Let this be a one off...Lets blame the boys for once..and make them accountable. What woman steals meat from the cooking pot? Altho, at the start of the vid, it is the daughter who comes to complain to mama that there is no meat...

My question is this...

If she had indeed found meat in the cooking pot and eaten it in silence, would she have been labelled the theif when word got out...???

MMMMmmmmmm, i know its early into 2009, but its serious food for thought.

*disclaimer*
the bottom bit is tongue and cheek...i really couldnt care less if the mom was the meat stealer or if it was the brother..its a great vid

Happy New Year people...it's 2009, be ready.
For my first post of the year, i have to send you this link sent by my facebook friend - Toni. For the non shona speaking, the general gist of what he is saying is dont pass me by running to the store for your carrots when im here with mine. I sell the best, most tasty, most juicy, huge carrots and they are awesome...or sommat like that...

I cant hear what the person filming is saying but this has warmed my heart for many reasons -

a) he has the happiest smile on his face despite zim's problems,
b) he is singing about carrots
c) he is dancing to his own song about ...carrots
and d)ooooh the sun is shining..

the power of this digital age...I mean, I wouldnt mind a life selling carrots if it made me smile like he did....

Maybe it's because it's almost christmas

and ive been cooking and stuff...with music blaring out. Some of it is getting me into the festive mood. Some of it arrives with so much memories of this past year and years past that it then makes me reflective, altering the mood altogether....but the one album i keep coming back to is aretha franklin's sparkle.

This has always been one of my very favourite albums of all time. The messages of love are positive in this..who can deny aretha as one of the greats? But sometimes - her yearning-to-be-loved songs are too too much ( i feel them ) but i dont want to ever love a man so hard that i would give him all my money, my heart and soul just to have him near...(but that is perhaps because i listened to too much independent woman ish in the 90's!!!

I digress...
Ms Aretha Franklin...covering a Curtis Mayfield track showing us how this ish is supposed to be did...

I love this group...
They remind me of home but not in a nostalgic way...but in a way which says - this is home now...this is what we look like and sound like..this is what we want. Self funded up until now..they have just signed a US deal with indie label secretly canadian... They have already graced the cover of fadar and had rave write ups in the New York Post and Dazed & Confused magazine.

Im too excited at the thought of them live..
